Digital Citizenship Presentation

Last week I blogged about the value of technology in the classroom. It's a resource and tool that can be incredibly helpful, but I'm not naive. I know that there are considerable risks that accompany the use of technology, especially when children are involved. When talking about Digital Citizenship, I think that safety is the most important issue that parents and students should care about, so that's what I focused on.

To complete this project, I used Google Presentation. It's essentially Power Point, but better. Because it's on my Google Drive, I can access it anywhere and it automatically updates on all devices without having to click save! It's an awesome, versatile tool that makes creating slide shows easy. Here is the link to my presentation!

My presentation was based on the North Carolina Public School standard 3.SE.1.3. It states, "Understand internet safety precautions (personal information, passwords, etc.)." Targeted towards third graders, this standard aims to teach students how to live digitally. The presentation is intended to be shown to student's parents in order to teach them how to reinforce the standards taught in school at home. I include the photo that I would use in class with my students to prompt a discussion about Digital Citizenship in order to show parents the five most important ways to stay safe around technology.

Not only did I learn a lot about Digital Citizenship, but I also learned so much about using Google Drive as a tool. I was surprised by how simple Google Presentation was to use! As a teacher, I could see myself using Google Drive in a variety of capacities! The accessibility to your work alone is helpful, especially when in a rush to prepare for an incoming class, but I would also use it facilitate projects in class. It's a wonderful collaborative tool, unique in that you can access the same presentation from different computers and usernames. Although I've only used Presentation and Docs, I feel pretty well versed in the ways of Google Drive and I'm excited to use its other features as resources for future projects.
