Book Buddies Assessment Portfolio

For this project, I was paired with a student in a local elementary school who had been identified as a struggling reader. He was a kindergartener and was lacking fundamental reading skills in order for him to move on to first grade. Over the course of my time with this student, I administered several reading assessments to gauge his level of reading ability and subsequently develop lesson plans to meet his needs.

I visited my student once a week for several weeks. The first four weeks were spent getting to know the student as a reader and understanding the strategies he used to understand text. I administered four reading assessments:

  • A reading interest survey and inventory
  • A book handling and print concepts assessment
  • A phonological awareness assessment
  • An oral reading and text reconstruction analysis
Based on the results of the assessments, I developed several lesson plan recommendations from which I could choose. Each of the lessons addressed the specific needs of my student based on the assessment results. Once I had developed several lessons, I chose five of the best lesson plans to carry out with my student.
  • Lesson 1: Comprehension of Characters and Key Details
  • Lesson 2: Asking Questions Before, During, and After Reading
  • Lesson 3: Predicting
  • Lesson 4: Reading with Emphasis - Fluency
  • Lesson 5: Rhyming Words
